Twitter starts to attract a lot more teenagers

Since its creation in 2006, Twitter, where your account can be maintained by Tweet Adder , has attracted a lot more adults than teenagers. In a recent study by Pew Internet & American Life Project however, the amount of teenagers who have been using the social networking platform has doubled in two years.

Two years, a Pew Survey found that only 8% of youngsters between 12 and 17 actually had an account on Twitter, but now, after a survey carried out in July, this has increased to 16%. According to Pew research specialist Mary Madden, this is a significant change:

“That doubling is definitely a significant increase.”

Teenagers have tended to stay away from the platform for a number of reasons. The first and most important element is the fact that every tweet is made public for everyone to see and read. Teenagers are generally less prone to broadcasting their opinions and their personal lives in such a way and prefer the likes of Facebook where they can be more selective in how they broadcast information,

It is also the case that they collect a lot more friends through Facebook that they would followers through Twitter so tweeting would be a lot more personal than using Facebook, something teenagers do not prefer to do.

The change in attitude is however more likely due to the fact that their family and relatives do not use Twitter and also they can set up anonymous accounts to either post opinions or follow others. The fact that celebrities also utilize Twitter a lot more is probably another aspect to the change. Data of 50m MegaUpload Users Could Be Deleted By Thursday

Hosting Service MegaUpload may have its data deleted as early as Thursday, according to reports. MegaUpload possesses data for over 50million users and as well as being accused of hosting illegal movies and music, the site also contains a lot of personal data files and photos which users would like to get back. Unlike web hosts such as Bluehost who keep data in their own database centers, MegaUpload used outside companies to host their users’ data.

Two of those companies, Carpathia Hosting Inc. and Cogent Communications Group Inc have been cited in a letter filed as part of the case from the Eastern District of Virginia US Attorney’s Office that the files will start to be deleted as soon as Thursday. Lawyer for MegaUpload Ira Rothken said he is confident that the data will not be erased:

“We’re cautiously optimistic at this point that because the United States, as well as Megaupload, should have a common desire to protect consumers, that this type of agreement will get done.”

According to Rothken, the data could be critical to MegaUpload’s case in court, and in any case, the hosting companies are in charge of the servers that hold the data so it will be up to those companies whether the data is removed or not.

Despite the fact that MegaUpload was based in Hong Kong, the US Federal Government was allowed to act as the company had hosting companies in the US (similar to Bluehost), who they were leasing servers from.

Currently then, there is great uncertainty as to when or if the data will be deleted but there will be many out there who will want to get their data back before the servers are wiped clean. We will have to wait and see about more developments.

Symantec advises users to stop using their software

Internet Security firm Symantec, who own the brand Norton Antivirus, have advised users to stop using one of its products after it was discovered that the code for the software was leaked online and that anyone using it could be exposed to hackers. The product in question is specifically the 2006 Norton Internet Security, Norton Antivirus Corporate Edition and Norton System Works. Alternatives, which can be bought with an ESET promo code, should be used for the time being. Symantec said in a statement:

“Symantec recommends disabling the product until Symantec releases a final set of software updates that resolve currently known vulnerability risks.”

Along with these products, the code was stolen for the remote access package pcAnywhere which allows users to remotely access their computers. The leak of this code means that any hacker could get into the systems of anyone using the package and have free rein over all the information inside.

When a hacker threatened to release the code, Symantec were initially dismissive of the threat as they were aware that the code was for a product which was 6 years old. Of course, there maybe still people using the software, and for PR reasons, Symantec decided to release a statement to cover their backs.

The hashtag was however hijacked by people who had been less than satisfied with the service of McDonalds. Google quite rightly want to improve the quality of the user’s experience on your website, and the bounce rate is an important measure Google uses to determine how relevant and informative a site is. The bounce rate is simply a measurement of the number of visitors who visit a site and then leave without visiting any other pages than the one they landed on. Google themselves define Bounce rate as the % “of single-page visits or visits in which the person left your site from the entrance (landing) page. Use this metric to measure visit quality – a high bounce rate generally indicates that site entrance pages aren’t relevant to your visitors. The more compelling your landing pages, the more visitors will stay on your site and convert….”

Google believe that if a site is relevant and full of quality content, the reader will want to visit other pages on the site. The assumption by Google is this – the more pages a user visits, the higher the quality of the site. And of course the higher the quality of the site, the higher the ranking!

A 100% bounce rate would mean that every one of the site’s visitors looks at the landing page, which they access the site on, and then exit he site without visiting any other page. To Google this means the lower the bounce rate percentage the better the site.

So you want to get a bounce rate below 50% so half your visitors go to another page on the site. To do this you want to take the following actions

Ensure your content is relevant and engaging so you encourage people to explore the site further
Have good, clear navigation and highlight links to other pages that will help the visitor

Always design your pages to improve the user experience and encourage them to explore your site. The more people you can convince to visit other pages the better. It will confirm with Google that your site is interesting and relevant – and that is critical to getting a good ranking!

Is Mega Upload’s Controversial Shutdown The Start of a Crackdown?

The controversy surrounding Mega Upload’s after it was shut down by the US government continues. The file sharing site and web host tool, had seen massive growth since it was established six years ago and at one time was the 13th most popular site on the internet, meaning it would have needed to be on a substantial server supported by the likes of Bluehost, as well as other hosting companies.

Mega Upload has however continued to court controversy during this time as it has continually been accused of sharing pirated material on its website. Although not the largest site of its kind online, the website was still making huge amounts of money and the US government has seized $50million worth of assets and claims that the $175million which the company earned over its six years in existence came mostly from copyright infringed content.

Still, Mega Upload had quite public with its claims it wanted to remove copyrighted material from its website. It provided copyright holders an option to hunt down illegal content which had been put on its website, and also had signed and registered with the US government under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, which was aimed at stopping piracy online.

For some then, despite there being worse sites online for illegal content, the US government has used Mega Upload as a symbol representing its stance on piracy online, which is costing the US economy billions per year. This shut down has followed all the news surrounding the equally controversial SOPA and PIPA acts which were making their way through congress.
