Drawplus:

The interface used by DrawPlus has had a make-over that gives it a more modern look and feel. Work space has been maximised and the tabs are both dockable and collapsible. There are new tabs dealing with features such as swatches, layers, transformation, brushes and pressures. The result of this improvement helps increase the program's ease of use and generally functionality.

Brush handling is one area that has benefited a great deal in this latest version of DrawPlus. With around 200 brushes that have been divided into categories such as pastel, photo, watery paint and designs, there is plenty to satisfy the would-be design artist. When using these natural paint effects, the software does not apply them in real time as this could slow down performance. Instead an outline appears as you draw and the actual effect does not appear until you the action is completed. Additional editing can be carried out with regards to the path, width and colour of the stroke.

There is a choice of five colour mixing modes. Along with the standard RGB and CMYK, you also get HSL Wheel and Square plus tinting selected from a drop down list. There are also over 250 paper textures that can be applied quickly to layers to give different effects to your designs.

Photoplus:
At its essence, PhotoPlus is a Photoshop clone without the most advanced features, for a fraction of the price. The interface is almost identical, from the tool icons to the layers pane. PhotoPlus allows working with several layers and supports masks, but you can't add new toolbars. Using layers, you can create and edit animations for the Web, and a number of filters are here. The set of tools is not as large as Photoshop's, but it's enough for retouching photos. Web designers will appreciate the tool that allows you to immediately view how JPEG compression will impact image quality. The trial version disables some of the tools and filters. General editing includes removing blemishes, resizing and enhancing colors and sharpness. PhotoPlus X4 does all these fairly well. Automatic Level and Contrast adjustment is an option, if you don’t want to get into the nitty-gritty world of channels, gamma, hues, or saturation.

Every family has a crass uncle who has a penchant for ruining family photos with his “hilarious” t-shirts. Similar to Adobe Photoshop’s Clone Stamp tool, PhotoPlus X4 has a nice Clone tool that allows easy removal of pesky logos or shirt text. In addition, PhotoPlus X4 has the ability to open and tinker with 48-bit images, allowing you to edit relatively bland images into works of art.

Much of the editing can be done via the various tools in the toolbar. To a beginner, the toolbar can be somewhat intimidating, so PhotoPlus X4 has the Quick Fix Studio full of most of the common tools all in one neat little window. You can view your changes in real time with the before and after pane enabled, and if you dislike any changes made, just hit the cancel button and you’re back to the original.
